Short rains growing season 2011/12

Posted 23/01/12

Up until recently, the farmers in Maseno district have been rejoicing over the good rains that has blessed the ground. But, the rains and also high winds have in the later stages of the season become a problem for the crops. Some parts of Kenya have experienced high flooding causing great losses to crops, putting even more pressure on Kenyan national food supply. Though we have not had any reports of serious flooding in Maseno, a number of crops belonging to the Maseno Project farmers have been damaged. We are trusting in God for the plants to recover well and to mature in time for harvest in January 2012.

A team visit was made recently by members of a Project Partner, Holy Trinity Church, Sittingbourne, London. The team leader for this visit, Bob Groombridge, gave this report:
"My last visit to Maseno was in June 2007 and the difference in the area around Maseno between then and now is astounding; the number of Farmers’ Field Schools has increased enormously and, with the encouragement of the Farm School Facilitators and local Project leadership, Project farmers are passing on what they have learnt to 4-5 of their neighbouring farmers who are not yet part of the Project. This explains why farms in the whole area are now doing so much (visibly!) better... We returned home on fire and our prayer is that this renewed flame in our hearts is constantly fanned to see God’s Kingdom advance here on earth and are committed to minister here with the faith and expectation that we had and witnessed in Maseno."
